The new Lifetime movie is based on the true story of brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez, who were convicted of the 1989 murder of their parents. Menendez: Blood Brothers, which debuts at 8:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, June 11, features Courtney Love as their mother in her first role since 2015. Meet the rest of the cast and find out who plays the convicted murderers.
The brothers were convicted after high-profile trial in 1993 that captured the nation’s attention because Court TV aired it live on television. Their defense claimed that the brothers killed their father after a lifetime of sexual abuse while their mother did nothing to help. The first trial ended with two deadlocked juries, but the second trial, which wasn’t televised, ended with a conviction. In 1996, they were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Lyle is now 49 years old and is imprisoned at Mule Creek State Prison. Erik is at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility and is 46 years old.
Here’s a look at the cast of the film.
Nico Tortorella as Lyle Menendez
Nico Tortorella is best known for playing Josh on TVLand’s Younger. He also starred in Odd Thomas, Scream 4 and Trespass with Nicholas Cage and Nicole Kidman. In 2013, he appeared in Fox’s crime drama The Following.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the 28-year-old Tortorella admitted that he signed on to the movie the second he saw that Courtney Love was his co-star. The two have since become friends after filming in Vancouver.
“She’s such a layered human being. She’s so much more than what people think that she is,” Tortorella told ET. “She has this hyper-intelligence about her. She comes to work and is so prepared. She puts so much work into the craft of acting and I think she’s really in this re-brand of sorts right now and she’s just dedicated to her well-being and it shows.”
Courtney Love as Kitty Menendez
The 52-year-old Courtney Love is best known as the lead singer of Hole, as well as her marriage to the late Kurt Cobain. She has a Golden Globe nomination for 1996’s The People vs. Larry Flynt, which earned her a number of other awards and nominations.
More recently, Love has turned her attention to infrequent acting. In 2014, she had a recurring role on FX’s Sons of Anarchy. In 2015, she played Elle Dallas in two episodes of Empire and appeared in three episodes of ABC’s Revenge. Menendez is her first film or TV credit since 2015.
“Courtney definitely had a vision for the character,” Menendez wardrobe designer Claudia Da Ponte told WWD. “The real Kitty [Menendez] tended to wear a lot of red so right off the bat we said Courtney would look good in red. From there we took it to jewel tones so you’ll notice throughout she wears a lot of red, yellow, emerald green and turquoise.”
Benito Martinez as Jose Menendez
The 45-year-old Benito Martinez plays Jose Menendez in Menendez: Blood Brothers. Martinez should look familiar to House of Cards fans, since he appeared as Hector Mendoza in seasons two and three. He also has recurring roles in The Blacklist and How To Get Away With Murder. On the movie side, he’s appeared in Bless Me, Ultima (2013), Million Dollar Baby (2004) and Saw (2004). He also starred on ABC’s American Crime.
Myko Olivier as Erik Menendez
Despite being two years older than Tortorella, the 30-year-old Myko Olivier stars as Erik Menendez, the younger of the two brothers. Oliver is best known for his run on Glee as Head Warbler in seven 2015 episodes. He’s also had roles in Castle, Awkward. and Community. Earlier this year, he starred in the Netflix movie Deidra & Laney Rob a Train.
Meredith Scott Lynn as Leslie Abramson
Meredith Scott Lynn plays Leslie Abramson, the Menendez brothers’ defense attorney. She also defended record producer Phil Spector, who was later convicted of second degree murder in the death of 2003 death of Lana Clarkson.
The 47-year-old Lynn played Enid Wexler in Legally Blonde. She also has a recurring part on NBC’s Days of Our Lives as Anne Milbauer. She’s also appeared in episodes of Weeds, American Horror Story, NCIS: Los Angeles, CSI and How I Met Your Mother.
