‘Fear the Walking Dead’: Who Killed the Family? [SPOILERS S03E06]

On Season 3 Episode 6 of Fear the Walking Dead, some fans are a little unclear about one clear plot point from the show. What exactly did Troy say and did it clear up the mystery about what happened to the family? This article has spoilers for Season 3 Episode 6, “Red Dirt.”

Here’s what you need to know.

During the episode, we found out that the family that left the ranch because they felt unsafe didn’t get very far. They were already walkers by the time Madison and Jeremiah found them, feasting on horses in a barn.

But who killed them?

Fans wondered if it might have been Troy, or the Native Americans who are threatening the Ranch, or even walkers who might have taken them by surprise.

At the very end of the episode, Try talked to Madison about what happened, but some viewers couldn’t quite understand what he said. Unfortunately, Troy confessed to Madison that he was the one who killed the family. He told Madison, “I didn’t go out there to kill them.” He wanted to talk to his friend Mike and be told face-to-face why Mike was leaving. But his friend wouldn’t do what Troy wanted. Somehow, the whole thing angered Troy enough that he lost control and ended up murdering the entire family.

That’s pretty major (to say the least.) Troy didn’t just kill the friend who wouldn’t do what he wanted, in a fit of rage. He killed all of them, including the younger sister.

Madison then asks Troy if he can control himself from now on, because he could be the new leader of the Ranch but not if he keeps losing control. Troy insists that yes, he can keep this rage in check.

However, it seems doubtful that Troy can be trusted. And does Madison even believe that he can? She’s likely trying to control and manipulate him as best she can, in case he does end up being the leader of the Ranch — she’ll have an established friendship with him. Meanwhile, Nick and Jeremiah are close, and Alicia is in a relationship now with Jake. No matter who is in charge at the Ranch, someone in Madison’s family will be close to them.

Of course, if they lose the Ranch to the Native Americans, none of that planning and manipulating will matter in the end.
