Jake Paul is a Disney Channel actor and social media star. Recently, however, he’s become the focus on some negative press. In a report made by KTLA, Paul has been accused of turning his peaceful Hollywood neighborhood into what his neighbors are calling “a living hell.”
This isn’t the first time the internet personality has been on the wrong side of a story. Read on to learn more about Paul, his Disney career, and the various controversies he’s incurred over the years.
1. He Stars in the Disney Channel Series ‘Bizaardvark’
Paul began his career by posting videos on Vine. His outlandish behavior and dangerous stunts earned a sizable fanbase, and by the time he was approached by Disney Channel in 2015, he had become a certified internet celebrity. Paul was was then cast as one of the main characters on Bizaardvark, which premiered on June 24th, 2016, and is currently in its second season.
The series revolves around Frankie and Paige, two friends who post funny songs and comedy videos on the internet. Paul, in a semi-fictionalized version of himself, plays Dirk Mann, the star of the daredevil internet series Dare Me Bro. When asked about the experience, he told The Wrap “It’s so cool to like transition from six seconds or a minute long like Facebook to doing like this scripted acting and multi-cam… It’s all really great.”
Paul has also appeared in various independent films like Dance Camp and The Monroes, both of which released in 2016.
2. He Received $1 Million to Start the Influencer Marketing Group TeamDom
Paul found financial success early on. In an interview with Techcruch, he recalled his surprise when he was offered money for his videos. “[The Vine videos] started to get traction,” he recalls. “I was 16 about to turn 17… in 2014… one of the videos went viral… We had a little taste of success and we knew what the audience wanted, before we knew it we were at 10,000 followers than 20,000 followers. At 500,0000 followers I remember this app company calling me and saying we’ll give you $200 to promote this app online.”
“Before we knew it,” he explained, “We were making a lot of money and anywhere we would go people would recognize us.” In January 2017, Paul parlayed this success into the influencer marketing group TeamDom. Techcrunch reports that he was given a whopping $1 million in financing to create a new kind of talent management and creative agency in Los Angeles.“
Paul explained that it wasn’t other YouTube stars, but rather a musician, who served as his business model: “I had this theory where I could replicate what Dr. Dre did in the music industry in the social media business. And I set out to put it to the test… found these kids online… they had 30,000 followers, then I flew them out to LA and taught them how to do things on social media.. In 2 weeks grew from 30,000 to 400,000 and today they have 16 million.”
TeamDom currently has a roster of 13 influencers.
In a statement released shortly after the announcement, Paul added “TeamDom is already home to the cream of the social influencer crop, generating over 40 million followers and 7 billion views with our current line-up of young, rising social media stars.”
3. His Brother Logan Paul is Also an Internet Star
Jake Paul isn’t the only one in the family who’s gotten famous online. In fact, his older brother Logan started posting videos on YouTube when he was only 10 years old. By the time he attended college in 2014, he had already amassed a sizable fanbase, according to Business Insider. Among his more popular video series were a daily vlog where he performed challenges, and various short films that he worked on with his brother.
Outside of YouTube, Logan has been involved in a number of high profile advertisements, including PepsiCo, Hanes, and HBO. He appeared on an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 2015, as well as the YouTube Red original film The Thinning (2016).
Currently, he runs TeamDom with Jake and releases music on his channel. He also helped Jake release the music video for “It’s Everyday Bro,” which is currently the 10th most disliked video on YouTube. You can check it out above.
4. He Snuck into the White House & Filmed It for His YouTube Channel
Paul made headlines earlier this year when he reportedly spent an entire night in the White House. The Sun reports that he managed to get past security during a media event and camped out in one of the upstairs restrooms until the early hours of the morning.
To prove this, he recorded the entire experience on his phone, dubbing it the “White House Overnight Challenge.” At one point during the video, he calls his mother to tell her where he’s located.
He proceeds to give a running commentary throughout the night, but as morning approached, Paul begins to look for an exit, worried that the secret service may discover that he’s spent the night. The last section of the video shows him walking out of the main gates without questioning.
In a follow up video, Paul claims that the Secret Service saw the footage online and tracked him down to his home in Los Angeles. He filmed himself calling the Secret Service, where they explained to him that what he did concerned them and that they needed him to conduct an interview with him.
Fortunately for the young YouTuber, they determined that he wasn’t a threat and let him go about his business. “Everything cool bro, I’m just a kid with a camera,” he says.
5. He Could Be Facing a Public Nuisance Lawsuit for His Stunts
Paul’s latest headline, and the one that had him trending on Twitter on Tuesday, comes from KTLA, who report that Paul’s insane stunts and crazy parties have drawn some annoyance from his neighbors. One disgruntled neighbor claims that they saw a flame coming from Paul’s house that reached the top of the his roof.
Another says that there was occasion where he placed a bunch of furniture in his swimming pool and set it on fire.
KTLA confirms that Paul could be facing a public nuisance lawsuit, given that he did much of this without city permits or expressed permission. When asked about the situation, he said “Aw I feel bad for [these neighbors]… For sure. But, there is nothing [I] can do though because Jake Paul is the strongest army out there.”
