Now that Spider-Man: Homecoming is in theaters, the Spidey-verse is back in the forefront and Sony has big plans. The studio is currently working on two spin-offs, Venom and Silver & Black. Unfortunately, neither of them will be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Venom will open first, while Silver & Black still doesn’t have a release date.

Venom did appear in Spider-Man 3, although many would prefer to forget that, so his solo movie won’t be his cinematic debut. The Silver & Black movie will be the first film to feature two of Spider-Man’s popular female supporting characters, Silver Sable and Black Cat.

Here’s what we know so far about Silver & Black.

1. Gina Prince-Bythewood Was Chosen to Direct the Film

Silver & Black will be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, Forbes reported in late May. She’s best known for directing Love & Basketball (2000), The Secret Life of Bees (2008) and Beyond The Lights (2014). She wrote the scripts for all three of those films.

Prince-Bythewood’s latest project was Shots Fired, Fox series that aired during the 2016-2017 TV season. The show was cancelled, so the director became available for the project.

The script for the film will be written by Lisa Joy (Westworld) and Christopher Yost (Thor: Ragnarok).

2. Prince-Bythewood Will Be the First Black Woman to Direct a Superhero Movie

Prince-Bythewood is getting a shot to direct a big-budget superhero movie after Sony saw how Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman did for Warner Bros. Prince-Bythewood was at the film’s premiere and was impressed.

“I’m proud of her,” the director told Vulture. “Knowing the incredible pressure that was on her as the first, she stepped up and she did it, and she did it so well.”

Prince-Bythewood will be the first black woman to direct a superhero movie. She’ll be just the second black director of a superhero movie, since Ryan Coogler is the first as the director of Marvel’s Black Panther. The director told Vulture that she’s constantly thinking about Silver & Black, even though it won’t come out for a few years. She explained:

“I go to bed thinking about it, I wake up thinking about it, and during the day, I have my notebook where I’m jotting down ideas and visuals and music. It’s so up my alley in terms of these two female characters and who they are and what they’re about. It’s the perfect way for me to dive into the Marvel universe, to focus on these two women who I really respect and can’t wait to bring to life.”

Prince-Bythewood has already made one contribution to the Marvel universe. She directed the pilot for Cloak & Dagger, which will air on Disney’s Freeform.

3. There’s Still No Cast, Even Though Production Starts This Fall

In her Vulture interview, Prince-Bythewood said she hopes to start casting the film “soon.” She’ll have to get moving if production is scheduled to start in the fall.

One person who will definitely not appear in the film is Tom Holland, who plays Spidey in Homecoming. Amy Pascal, who produced the film for Sony with Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige got everyone confused when she told Filmstarts that Spider-Man would be part of the Venom/Silver & Black universe. She also made a confusing statement in a Fandango interview.

“All the characters are a part of the Marvel comic book universe. They’re all interrelated in that universe,” Pascal told Fandango. “Spider-Man is now a part of the MCU, as he was created to be in the beginning. The other things that Sony is doing, which are characters from the Marvel comic universe, are independent separate franchises, both Venom and Silver Sable and Black Cat.”

Pascal sent a clarification statement to Fandango, explaining that she meant all these characters are from the same Marvel comic book universe, not the same Marvel cinematic universe.

She debuted in The Amazing Spider-Man #265, which was written by Tom DeFalco with art from Ron Frenz. In the issue, she meets Spidey for the first time while trying to Black Fox in New York City.

Silver Sable doesn’t have any superpowers, but she is a master martial artist. She has been depicted as being invincible to psychic manipulation.

Black Cat, whose real name is Felicia Hardy, is cat burglar. She first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #194 in 1979. The issue was written by Marv Wolfman with art by Keith Pollard.

In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story star Felicity Jones played a character called “Felicia” and she was eventually supposed to play Black Cat. When Sony decided to abandon the ASM universe, Jones’ hopes of playing the character were dashed.

In a GQ interview, Jones said, “Being vacuum-packed into a leather suit, doing backflips?! I’d love that. Can you start a petition for me?” In a January 2015 Clevver Movies interview, she still said she would “love to play” Black Cat.
