During the mid-credits scene of Spider-Man: Homecoming, the character of Mac Gargan mentions that a whole bunch of bad guys have it out for Spider-Man, potentially meaning that the Sinister Six are beginning to form. So does this mean that a Sinister Six movie is in development? What is in the works for this team of bad guys?
Currently, there is no Sinister Six movie actively in development. If one is being worked on, this has not been publicly announced or reported on.
If you feel like you’ve heard about a Sinister Six movie, though, that’s because Sony had been working on getting one made for years. Back when Sony still owned the exclusive rights to Spider-Man and was making their Amazing Spider-Man series, they announced a Sinister Six spinoff movie to be directed by Drew Goddard.
Sony originally announced this film with a release date of November 11th, 2016. The studio was also developing a standalone Venom movie at this time. However, in February 2015, it was revealed thatMarvel Studios had reached a deal with Sony whereby Spider-Man would appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony therefore canceled its Amazing Spider-Man series, and the Sinister Six film was scrapped as well.
Sony hasn’t completely stepped out of the Spider-Man movie game, though. Spider-Man: Homecoming is produced both by Marvel Studios and by Columbia Pictures; Columbia Pictures is owned by Sony. In addition, Sony has several Spider-Man related movies currently in development, including a movie focused on Venom, a movie focused on Silver Sable and Black Cat, and an animated Spider-Man film that revolves around Miles Morales.
Sinister Six has not been announced as one of Sony’s future Spider-Man movies. For now, it seems unlikely that there would be a Sinister Six movie made by Sony, as Spider-Man won’t even be in those Sony films, at least for the time being.
“For now, correct,” Amy Pascal, chairperson of the Motion Pictures Group of Sony Pictures Entertainment, told Collider when asked to verify that Spider-Man won’t be in the spinoffs. “All of them are part of the Marvel comic universe. Not all of them are part of Marvel cinematic universe.”
In addition, Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts told Screen Rant that Sony’s movies aren’t connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe at all and that he’s not focused on them, something he probably wouldn’t say if the end credits of Homecoming directly set up a Sony film.
“It’s not connected to the Marvel world, so that’s really intriguing…what that will be,” Watts said. “I don’t know anything about it. It’s not connected, so there’s not that overlap. I’m only focused on my movie right now.”
In Spider-Man: Homecoming, there’s absolutely no reference to Venom, Silver Sable, or Black Cat, something that could have easily been thrown in if the plan was to help set up the Sony movies in Homecoming.
This is all to say that while the Spider-Man: Homecoming end credits may set up a Sinister Six storyline, it seems likely that this is something that will become a factor in the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequels rather than in a Sinister Six film.
We know that there will be two Homecoming sequels; Marvel tends to like to spread out the love in their cinematic universe by having a variety of movies about all different kinds of characters, so it would be a bit out of character for them to make an individual Sinister Six in addition to three Spider-Man films. And Sony has said that Spider-Man won’t be in their movies, which means they couldn’t be the ones making the Sinister Six spinoff, since the Sinister Six would have nothing to do without Spider-Man. (Amy Pascal did imply in an interview last month that Tom Holland can be in their spinoffs; however, she later walked this back, and she and Kevin Feige would soon clarify that Spider-Man won’t be in the Sony spinoffs.)
It’s certainly possible that there could be some sort of Sony and Marvel crossover in the near future, with Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man films meeting with the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a Sinister Six movie. But for now, all evidence points to the end credits of Spider-Man: Homecoming setting up the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming, not setting up a Sinister Six movie.
