‘Game of Thrones’: What Marriage Did Gilly Read About to Sam? [S07E05 Explained]

There was a short bit in Game of Thrones Season 7 Episode 5 that a lot of fans might have missed, but actually means a lot for the show’s history and future. Did you miss this short but key scene?

This article has spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 7 Episode 5.

Gilly is reading bits and pieces from the Citadel books to Sam while he’s trying to concentrate. Sam is very upset that the Maesters aren’t taking him seriously. That’s when Gilly reads something that is absolutely huge, but Sam completely missed it because he was focused on something else.

Here’s what Gilly read:

Says here (the high septon) annulled a marriage from Rhaegar and married him in secret to another women in Dorne.”

This is huge news because she’s talking about Jon Snow’s parents.

The Tower of Joy scene that Bran saw in his vision with the Three-Eyed Raven took place in Dorne. That’s where Lyanna was hiding and gave birth to Jon. That’s when she asked Ned to hide the baby because Robert wouldn’t accept him and would want the baby dead.

Let’s spell that out once again, because it’s so important. The scene where we learned that Jon’s parents are Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen took place at the Tower of Joy in Dorne. And Gilly just read that the High Septon secretly married Rhaegar to someone in Dorne.

This is significant because it means that Jon Snow was never a bastard at all. He is a legitimate heir to the Iron Throne. Yes, Jon Snow has a claim to the Iron Throne himself, as a direct legitimate descendant of the Mad King Aerys.

It remains to be seen how this will play in his budding relationship with Daeneyrs, or whether Sam ever actually realizes what it was that Gilly read to him and shares it with Jon.
