‘Game of Thrones’ S07E04: Sansa’s Expression Watching Brienne & Arya Explained

HBO

Sansa had a strange expression on her face while she was watching Brienne and Arya on Game of Thrones Season 7 Episode 4 tonight. What was that all about? Here are the top theories and explanations.

This post has minor spoilers for Season 7 Episode 4, “The Spoils of War.”

During the episode, Arya had a scene where she and Brienne fought, and Arya showed how incredibly skilled she is now. She’s come a long, long way since she last saw Sansa. In fact, that kill list of hers is a lot more real than Sansa originally gave her credit for.

But during the scene, Sansa had a strange expression on her face, almost like she was upset or angered about Brienne and Arya’s fight.

Fans have a few theories about what that means.

First, fans think that maybe Sansa is feeling either jealous or overwhelmed when considering all the “special powers” that her relatives have. Everyone, it seems, has special abilities now but her.

Jon has a magic wolf and he’s been resurrected from the dead. Arya is an assassin and she can change her appearance at will. Bran is the Three Eyed Raven and can see the future and the past. Heck, even their uncle, Benjen Stark, is partially undead.

So where does that leave Sansa?

It seems like many of the Starks siblings’ dreams and plans are coming to pass, despite all the terror and hardship they’ve been suffering. Sansa, meanwhile, has suffered her own share of hardships, but the dreams that she had when she was young seem meaningless now.

However, Sansa does have some true skills. She’s shrewd and cunning. She makes a great leader. She will likely be Queen.

Sansa does have a place, even if it’s not a supernatural, other-worldly type of place like her siblings.

Others think that Sansa was more confused and overwhelmed by how much everyone she loves has changed. Arya is no longer that little girl with plans bigger than she could achieve. Now she’s a skilled fighter who really can make that kill list happen. Bran is no longer the younger brother who was paralyzed and helpless. Now he’s hard to reach, completely different, and powerful. Jon’s no longer unsure about himself. Now he knows his place and is a powerful commander.

Sansa may just be struggling with how different everyone is and trying to catch up to all of it. She may be struggling to understand where she fits in all of this. She loves her family, but this reunion is showing her that things are very different and will never, ever be the same.

Adjusting to a “new normal” can be tough, and letting go of those dreams of “home” can be difficult.

If she is feeling insecure, as some commented below, then Littlefinger might try to use that to his advantage, to sow more discord and chaos.

Still others, such as Derek Dwilson in the comments below, believe Sansa is worried that she might be on Arya’s list. There have been some interesting parallels pointed out this season between Sansa and Cersei, and Cersei has had moments of worry about her younger sibling too.
