‘Game of Thrones’: When Did Littlefinger Say ‘Chaos Is a Ladder?’ [VIDEOS]

HBO

During Season 7 Episode 4, there was a chilling moment when Littlefinger was reminded of the time he said “Chaos is a Ladder.” When did Littlefinger say that?

Read on for more details.

This post will have spoilers for Season 7 Episode 4.

When Littlefinger and Bran Stark spoke, Littlefinger tried to get on Bran’s good side. But he also seemed to possibly be testing Bran’s knowledge by giving him the Valyrian dagger.

We know that Bran can see the past, but his vision of it is incomplete. He’s still processing all the information that the Three Eyed Raven passed on to him. So no one is quite sure what he knows or how much information is even available to him.

But in this scene, Bran seemed to hint to Littlefinger that he’s seen things that Littlefinger said when Bran wasn’t around. And this will bother Petyr greatly.

Littlefinger wasn’t very happy about this reminder.

Let’s look back at just when he said these words before and their context.

He’s said it twice. Once in a conversation with Varys here. Start watching at about 1:49 to see the context. He actually says it at 2:17:

First, Varys says the Iron Throne is made of a thousand blades, taken from the hands of Aegon’s fallen enemies. Littlefinger corrects him, saying there aren’t even 200 blades in the throne.

Littlefinger says the realm is a lie, a story they’ve told over and over. But then Varys says that once they abandon the lie, all they have left is chaos. “A gaping pit waiting to swallow us all.” That’s when Littlefinger says:

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, never to try again. The fall breaks them. And some given a chance to climb, they refuse. They cling to the realm, or the gods, or love, the illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is.”

Littlefinger also said it to Tywin in the video below, at 2:52:

He tells Tywin that a moment of chaos affords opportunities, lost soon after. Tywin’s not impressed. “You say it as if you were the first man alive to think it. Yes a crisis is an opportunity. What other brilliant insights have you brought me today?”

Bran definitely has the upper hand on Littlefinger, knowing what he does about Petyr’s plans. But will Littlefinger let that go or will he try to take Bran out at some point?
