‘Game of Thrones’: Gendry’s History with Beric & Thoros [Plot Recap & Video]

HBO

How did Gendry know Beric and Thoros again? This article will give a brief plot recap of their time together.

Spoilers through Season 7 Episode 5.

When Gendry follows Jon to Eastwatch, he finds that the Hound, Beric Dondarrion, and Thoros are in jail. But Gendry’s incredibly angry about Jon Snow wanting to take Beric and Thoros with him, after his history with them.

What exactly happened?

In Season 3, Arya and Gendry were captured by the Brotherhood Without Banners. Gendry decided to stay with the Brotherhood because he finally felt like he had a place where he belonged — a family of sorts. They were the family he never had. But then it all fell apart.

When Melisandre showed up, they sold him to her for gold. (And because she insisted that it was the Lord of Light’s will, and Thoros also follows the Lord of Light.)

This stung for many reasons, the main one being because Gendry never really felt like he belonged. He finally fit in with them, and they betrayed him.

Here’s that scene:

Melisandre did reveal Gendry’s true heritage to him.

The bastard of Robert of the House Baratheon, First of His Name, King of the Andals and the First Men. Why do you think the Gold Cloaks wanted you? There is power in a king’s blood.”

But she only wanted Gendry for the power in his blood. She leeched his blood in a ritual and likely would have killed him. But Davos set him free and sent him back to King’s Landing on a rowboat.

Because of what Thoros and Beric did to Gendry, they’re both now on Arya’s kill list. And Gendry has, understandably, had a very tough time forgiving them himself.
