Jon Snow had a conversation with Daenerys in Game of Thrones Season 7 Episode 4 that closely mirrored a conversation he had with Mance Rayder in Season 5 Episode 1. This was likely done deliberately by the show’s producers, and fans are enjoying pointing out the similarities.
This post has spoilers for Season 7 Episode 4.
Don’t read on unless you’ve already watched today’s episode.
When Jon and Daenerys talked in a cave, Jon finally helped Dany to see how dangerous the White Walkers are going to be (and that they aren’t just something he’s making up.) She agreed to help him, as long as he would bend the knee to her. But Jon said he couldn’t do that, his people had been through too much and they would never accept a Southern leader.
Interestingly, it looks like the conversation between Dany and Jon mirrors almost exactly the conversation that Jon had with Mance Rayder in Season 5.
Watch Jon’s conversation with Mance below. It starts at 1:43.
Dany told Jon that she would fight for him, if he would bend the knee to her. Jon said his people wouldn’t accept a Southern ruler after what they suffered. Dany said they would if their king did. They chose Jon to lead and protect them. “Isn’t their survival more important than your pride?”
It’s very similar to the conversation Jon had with Mance, who also said his people wouldn’t accept a southern ruler. And Jon told him him, “Isn’t their survival more important than your pride?” Mance insisted it wasn’t about pride. “Then bend the knee and save your people,” Jon insisted. But Mance said all the respect they had for him would be gone if he did that.
Yes, Dany literally said the exact same thing to John that he had said to Mance Rayder. This shows just how similar Jon and Dany are, and that they both have the best intentions for their people.
