Tonight, This Is Us star Chrissy Metz will be appearing on an episode of Long Island Medium.
With the help of Theresa Caputo, Metz will reconnect with her late grandmother. In a preview clip for tonight’s episode, Metz shares, “I knew that she was talking about my grandmother, because my grandmother and I were connected on such a deep level and we were soul sisters.”
The experience becomes emotional for Metz, who tears up as she shares with Theresa how often she used to visit her grandmother. “She would send me cards all the time and we would always sign it, ‘xoxo'”.
Metz was born and raised in Florida. She spent a majority of her adolescence in Japan– her father was in the Navy– before moving back to Gainesville. In an interview last September with Glamour magazine, Metz shared, “I’m the middle child… I wanted to entertain and make people laugh. I think it really hit in third grade, but once I was in high school, I joined chamber choir. I wanted to do musical theater too, but they had rehearsals at the same time. That was a bit of Sophie’s Choice. That’s probably an extreme way to [reference it]! But I chose chamber choir because it was really elite to get into.”
Interestingly enough, it was an open casting call for her sister that got the ball rolling. Metz was babysitting her sister one day and brought her to a casting call when a woman in the room told her she should audition. Metz tells Glamour, “I was filling out the paperwork for my sister, and there was this woman sitting across from me who says to me that she taught theater at my high school. I was thinking, ‘I don’t know this woman.’ She said, ‘You really should audition’… My then manager comes out and says, “Hey, do you do anything? Do you sing? Do you act?” In my heart, I’m like, ‘Yes, yes, I want to!’ And so they had me audition. They said, ‘You don’t belong in this town.’ It kind of all started from there, realizing acting could be a real thing from a small little town in Florida.”
Fast forward a couple of decades and Metz is starring on the critically-acclaimed NBC show, This Is Us. The actress says she identified with the role of Kate from the get-go. She, herself, was an assistant when she first moved to LA. She even took children to auditions and worked as a set nanny before she booked jobs as an actress. Speaking about her callback for This Is Us, Metz shares, “I remember going to the lot at the casting office at Sony and everyone was like, ‘Good morning! Good morning!’ It was like Belle from Beauty and the Beast. I just walked in and was like, ‘You know what Chrissy? You’re going to go in and do your best because it’s enough.'”
These days, Metz is dating Josh Stancil, a cameraman on This Is Us. The couple made their first public appearance together in January EW’s SAG Awards Party. Be sure to check out Chrissy Metz on This Is Us Tuesdays at 9pm ET/PT on NBC.
