Christina Aguilera to Perform Whitney Houston ‘The Bodyguard’ Tribute at 2017 AMAs

Tonight, Christina Aguilera says she will be “honoring an angel” at the 2017 American Music Awards. Aguilera is set to deliver a medley of songs in tribute to the late icon Whitney Houston. This is to celebrate the 25th anniversary of her movie The Bodyguard. Houston played the role of a music superstar named Rachel, who ends up falling in love with her bodyguard. The bodyguard, played by Kevin Costner, felt conflicted in his feelings, wanting to stay focused in protecting Rachel from stalkers and a hitman. Houston’s hit song “I Will Always Love You” was made famous in this film. Here’s a clip from the film below.

Just a few weeks ago, Aguilera took to Instagram to talk about her excitement in honoring the late Houston for the AMAs. Aguilera wrote in her social media post, “I am excited, honored and humbled to perform a tribute to one of my idols, Whitney Houston for the 25th Anniversary of The Bodyguard.” According to Gold Derby, in 1994 Whitney Houston actually took home eight AMAs for “The Bodyguard Soundtrack,” which ended up tying Michael Jackson’s record for the most wins in a single year.

This isn’t the first time that Aguilera has performed in honor of Houston. In 2001, Aguilera performed Houston’s song “Run To You” at the BET Awards when Houston was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award. After Aguilera’s performance, Houston said, “You’ve done the best rendition of ‘Run to You,’ besides myself.” See Aguilera’s performance from the 2001 BET Awards in the below video.

According to Billboard, Whitney Houston’s estate released the following statement, “Whitney herself stated in 2001 that Christina Aguilera sang the best version of her song ‘Run to You.’ It is with great appreciation and honor that she is returning to participate on the American Music Awards for a special tribute honoring the 25th anniversary of The Bodyguard. Whitney said that Christina is without a doubt one of the best voices she enjoyed in this generation of music.” In response to this Aguilera released her own statements, saying that, “I am honored and humbled to be asked to participate in such a special tribute of a timeless soundtrack that has been a huge inspiration not only in my own personal life and career, but to countless aspiring singers — touching music lovers worldwide and influencing the history of music itself. To be honoring the one and only, Whitney Houston, is a blessing and I am grateful to celebrate the spirit of her songs and legend that lives on. I feel eternally fortunate to have personally met her on and off the stage. My deep appreciation for her kindness to me while coming up in the business — her graciousness, generosity, humanity and beauty — lived up to everything I could have hoped for in meeting my idol and will forever be cherished in my memory of her.” Whitney Houston was found unresponsive in a bathtub the night before the Grammy Awards in 2012. According to CBS News, Houston’s cause of death was an accidental drowning, combined with additional factors including “effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use.”
