We’ve been seeing trailers for Black Mirror Season 4, but do we know yet when the new season will be released? There have been a lot of rumors circulating about the air date for Netflix’s highly acclaimed series. Right now, the rumors are still focusing on the idea that Season 4 will be released in December, but we don’t know yet for sure. It seems like it won’t be until December 6 at the earliest. Netflix has been very quiet about the release date so far, as of the time of publication. Here are all the clues we have so far about when to keep an eye out for the new season.

UPDATE: Netflix has announced Black Mirror will return on December 29.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Right now, the biggest rumor is that the release date might be December 6 or December 7, but others think we’ll have to wait until January 2018. As is usual for most shows, some members of the media were given screeners for Season 4 of Black Mirror. They had an embargo on those screeners until December 4, but some people with screener access have been said that those embargoes were pushed back until December 6. If that’s true, then it’s unlikely that the new season will be released before the embargo date for reviews. You can see a discussion about it on Reddit here.

Netflix has been teasing the new season with a series of trailers, none of which give a date for the show’s return. The “13 Days of Black Mirror” trailers began on November 24, with one trailer released every day. Netflix has said that there will be a big surprise at the end of the “13 Days of Black Mirror,” which is on December 6. Many fans think that this means Netflix will release the entire season on December 6. Others think they’ll just announce the official release date that day. Still others think that we’ll get one episode from the new season, to tide us over, and a release date for the rest of the season.

Netflix recently changed its Black Mirror page to read: “Season 4 Coming Soon.” But it hasn’t put an actual date on the page. You can access Netflix’s page for Black Mirror here. Not putting a release date is unusual for Netflix. The company normally advertises release dates for shows far enough in advance that people can prepare to binge watch each season. In fact, the question isn’t usually what day a show is being released but what time. Netflix usually releases its new seasons at 3 a.m. Eastern on the release date (which is midnight Pacific in California.)

But sometimes Netflix bucks its own trends. The company was pretty coy about giving a release date for Punisher, so this isn’t completely unprecedented. Many people thought that Punisher was just going to drop without any release date announced. But Netflix did eventually give a release date. However, they didn’t announce the release date until October 19, less than a month before it was going to premiere on November 17. At this point, if Netflix does the same thing for Black Mirror, then we might be looking at a January release date instead of the much-rumored December release. Some fans think January is more likely because they think Netflix won’t want to compete with all the hype about the new Star Wars.

Season 1 if Black Mirror premiered on December 4, 2011 on Channel 4. Season 2 premiered on February 11, 2013 Channel 4. A Christmas special then aired on December 16, 2014. Season 3 premiered on October 21, 2016 on Netflix. So you can’t really look back at previous premiere dates to get a clue about the next one. Interestingly, Wikipedia has placed their premiere date guess as 2018, based on a Deadline article that states the new season will begin streaming in 2018.
