Hallmark’s 2017 Hallmark Hall of Fame movie, The Christmas Train, is based on a bestseller by David Baldacci, about a cynical journalist who finds love on a cross-country train ride. Hallmark has a wonderful way of filling their movies with Christmas magic, snow, and a wintry feel no matter when or where they’re filmed. Although The Christmas Train is about a life-changing train ride, many of the scenes weren’t even filmed on a train.
The Christmas Train was filmed in Canada, including in Vancouver and British Columbia.
Some of the specific locations include:
- Heritage Hall on Main Street in Vancouver
- Pacific Central Station in Vancouver
- Pacific Centre Mall in Vancouver
The movie was filmed in September. A genius production crew was able to turn the warmer months into a winter wonderland that’s very convincing.

If you want to take your own Christmas train ride, you have a lot of options, even if they don’t involve where The Christmas Train was filmed. Some include:

- The Polar Express Train Ride in cities across America: This is operated by Warner Bros. and Rail Events. The rides are an hour long and bring scenes from the book and movie to life. These are in 40 cities across the country.
- North Pole Express in New Hope, Pennsylvania: You can sip cocoa and sing carols and eat cookies. An extra special trip is on Christmas Eve. It’s $62 for kids and $72 for adults.
- The Elf Limited in Cass, West Virginia: This 60 minute train ride takes you through the beautiful mountainside with a crew of Santa’s helpers riding along. $51 a person
- The Polar Express in Burlington, Vermont: This 75-minute ride includes cookies, cocoa, and Christmas carols. You’re asked to wear PJs and bring a book for Santa.
- North Pole Flyer in Cedar Park, Texas: How fun! This is a two-hour trip with lots of fun for the kids, including visits from Santa and Mrs. Claus and a book reading.
- Christmas Special Dinner Train in Chattanooga, Tennessee: This one is really special, with a meal on vintage dining cars for parties of two to eight. Tickets start at $75.
- Train to Christmas Town in Hood River, Oregon: Children get to go on an adventure based on the 2012 book. Characters come to life.
- The Snow Train in Seattle: This takes you through the Cascade Mountains to Leavenworth, WA. You’ll enjoy singers, magicians, a band and more. The train arrives at a Lighting Festival with horse-drawn carriages and carolers. It only takes place on Dec. 2, 9, and 16.
- Train of Lights in Sunol, CA: A beautiful way to see the lights in California. Tickets are $30.
- Holiday Express in the south and midwest: Decorated carriages travel through parts of the U.S. and stop at 27 locations. Passengers can hop on at any of the stops and see a reindeer stable, elves’ workshop, and more. It’s free.
