‘Hyrule Warriors’: Top 10 Facts You Need to Know

The Legend of Zelda franchise has ventured off into a different directions from time to time. Link and his rotating cast of allies and enemies have starred in portable adventures, 4-player co-op games and even target shooting motion controlled minigames.

In 2014, Nintendo and Koei Tecmo have partnered together develop an awesoem side project within The Legend of Zelda universe – Hyrule Warriors. The combat here is a lot more fast paced and instead of three or four enemies to fight at a time, you’ll have to contend with 50 orcs at a time. This is most definitely the biggest September 2014 release for the Nintendo Wii U, so owners of the console will want to become real familiar with this beat ’em up adventure.

The official announcement of Hyrule Warriors came about after being shown on a Nintendo Direct livestream (December 18, 2013). Nintendo and Koei Tecmo officially worked together to make this game a reality, plus its development is being handled by Koei Tecmo’s Omega Force and Team Ninja development teams. Eiji Aonuma, the longtime producer for the Zelda series, lent his expertise to the game by becoming its supervisor.

The main gameplay basis of Hyrule Warriors is quite similiar to the Dynasty Warriors series. Players will select a playable hero, run through massive battlefields, kills hundreds of monsters, take on huge bosses, collect items/weapons and do so much more.

The game’s Adventure Mode offers a bit of a change-up to the mechanics by adding in the over-world map from the original Legend of Zelda (NES). Players will get to navigate the 8-bit map and progress through the main story by unlocking different parts of the map for play.


2. The Plot Centers on Time Portals in Time and Space That Send Its Characters Into Different Time Periods

Hyrule Warriors takes place in a familiar location – Hyrule. Link stars as a Hylian solider-in-training. A former protector of the Triforce named Cia becomes corrupted by an evil force and sets out to destroy the world of Hyrule. Cia sets out on this mission just because she’s jealous of the relationship stemming between Link and Zelda (Cia is madly in love with Link).

Cia’s minion open up time portals within the game’s world, which explains the presence of different Legend of Zelda game characters being playable – Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword.


3. Co-Op Gameplay Will Allow for Local Play Between the Wii U Gamepad and the TV Monitor

Hyrule Warriors will allow for 2-player, co-op gameplay through the use one player using the Wii U Gamepad. Another player can hop into the game through normal means – using a Wii U Pro Controller to play through a TV monitor.


4. Several Playable Characters From Through the Series Will Be Playable

A slew of Legend of Zelda warriors have already been confirmed as playable characters within Hyrule Warriors. Those characters include:

You can expect to see an addition of even more fan-favorite characters after release as DLC.


5. A Bunch of Familiar Legend of Zelda Baddies Will Also Show Up

You’ll have to contend with several old and new Legend of Zelda villains during your playthrough of the main campaign. Some of the confirmed baddies you’ll no doubt run into include:
