The biggest video game release date of the year is coming on Tuesday, are you ready? There’s Far Cry 4, LittleBigPlanet 3, Dragon Age: Inquisition, WWE 2K15 and the PS4/Xbox One versions of Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 5 — all releasing on November 18. I don’t know about you, but I’ve always been a little skeptical of these new-gen ports of old-gen games. However, Grand Theft Auto 5 is more than just a port.
Grand Theft Auto 5 brings a plethora of new features to Rockstar’s beloved game. Here’s what you need to know:
1. There’s a first-person view
Rockstar’s biggest change to the Xbox One/PS4 version of GTA 5 is the addition of a first-person view mode. You can now drive your cars, shoot your enemies, jump off of a cliff all from a first-person perspective view. It completely changes how you play GTA for the first time in the franchise’s history. 2. More traffic means more crashes.
Because of the console capabilities of the Xbox One and PS4, Rockstar was able to not only increase the draw distance but also add more cars on screen at once. This means denser traffic. This means more crashes. This means you likely won’t be able to hop off of the highway and onto a city street in your Truffade Adder or Pegassi Vacca without crashing into another vehicle. Challenge accepted.

3. It runs at 1080p at 30 fps
While we still won’t see a 1080p, 60 fps Grand Theft Auto, the game will run at 1080p and 30 fps, which will still look great and play smoothly. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions also ran at 30 fps, although the framerate constantly dropped into the 20s. Hopefully, the new-gen experience is more stable and a constant 30 fps. Rockstar also added small touches like fireflies in the countryside, more wildlife, more cars on screen at once and new lighting/weather effects.
4. Your previous gen progress can carry over
If you were timid to upgrade to the PS4/Xbox One version of Grand Theft Auto 5 because of all of the progress you already made in the PS3/Xbox 360 version, you don’t have to worry — your previous gen progress/save game will carry over to the new gen version. Your characters and progress in Grand Theft Auto Online will carry over to the new game.
5. Updated soundtrack
There are plenty of little updates to the Xbox One/PS4 version of Grand Theft Auto 5, such as adding fireflies to the countryside and working speedometers in vehicles. But one things fans have always enjoyed about the franchise is its soundtracks, and Rockstar has updated the GTA 5 soundtrack by adding over 100 songs into the mix. Hopefully, lame musicians won’t sue this time.
