Now that 2015 has officially come to a close, it’s time to check out the final Android games rollout of the year.
Mobile game devs didn’t take a break during the month you’d expect to see a lack of new titles to play. Plenty of well known publishers and some smaller ones released some quality free games. Ubisoft brought us back into the colorful world of Rayman, Katy Perry got the headliner spot in her own mobile game, Magic: The Gathering headed into the match-three puzzler realm etc.
These experiences and more make up the entirety of our list of the top five best new free Android games of December 2015.
1. Rayman Adventures
Rayman’s resurgence over the past few years has been a bright spot in the current gaming landscape. Ever since he returned to his 2D animated roots in Rayman Origins, Ubisoft’s no-limb having hero has regained the adoration of gamers everywhere. On the mobile front, Rayman hopped into a new infinite runner that stood out from other games in the genre. Each level is beautifully animated, which makes running through them all a visual treat. Rayman Adventures gave us the chance to pick up collectibles we may have missed by changing the direction in which we ran, plus adopting different Incrediball creatures gave each character special abilities. The platforming hero’s high hilarity was just another factor in making this Rayman mobile release one of December 205’s best.
2. Magic: The Gathering – Puzzle Quest
The card battling world is vast and wide. One of the OG’s of such a long storied tradition is Magic: The Gathering, a card battler that features a set of hardcore rules and regulations for its dedicated fanbase. Thankfully, this Puzzle Quest variation of the mythical card game simplifies its formula and adds some fun match-three puzzler elements for mobile gamers. For those of you who have a huge collection of Magic: The Gathering cards, a ton of them make an appearance in the game. Defeating your foes means gamers have to build their best decks, take note of each card’s special abilities and pull off huge matching combos. This card battler/match-three puzzler hybrid is too great to pass up.
3. Cut The Rope: Magic
Om Nom has returned! And of course, that little green tyke needs its treats ASAP! Cut The Rope: Magic switches up its usual formula by gifting Om Nom with several new magical powers. The overall puzzle stage count comes in at 100, plus there’s additional levels on the way. With such a huge amount of content to play through, you’ll have a rollicking good time as you transform Om Nom into new forms. Cutting threads, chomping on candy pieces, eating stars and defeating bosses is even better now since Om Nom can switch roles (those new roles include the Bird, Baby, Fish, Mouse and Spirit forms). Cut The Rope: Magic is another great entry in this beloved mobile gaming franchise.
4. Star Skater
The Google Play storefront is home to a bunch of skateboarding mobile games. The latest one to hit Android devices is Halfbrick Studios’ wicked new game that has an art style all its own. Star Skater places you and your zany skateboarder on a road full of vehicles, plus you can hit the half-pipe for some trick combo sessions. Skating throughout this mobile game’s world lets you do so in the form of a rad dude, clown, gorilla, skeleton, panda and so many more wild avatars. Star Skater is a fine example of a skateboarding game that does away with simulation elements and just sticks to being wild.
5. Katy Perry Pop
We’re pretty shocked that it took this long to get Katy Perry’s likeness into a mobile game. For those gamers who want to live out their pop stardom dreams, Katy Perry Pop lets you do just that on a much smaller scale. After getting discovered by Miss Perry, you’ll start your journey as a future multimedia star. You’ll record hit songs, customize your appearance for the world to see, produce music videos and even see the world through Katy Perry’s wild eyes with “Katy Vision.” If Kim Kardashian: Hollywood is your cup of tea, then Katy Perry Pop should be the perfect fit for you.
