‘Overwatch’s’ New Hero: Ana Revealed

Overwatch is finally ready to add their newest hero to their roster, increasing the number of playable characters to 22. In a new video released Tuesday afternoon, Ana is back with her original Overwatch crew.

Hype started to build for a new character last week, when the Overwatch Twitter feed posted this photo. Fans speculated that this would be the weapon for the new hero, who was rumored to function as a “support sniper.”

The momentum for Sombra/Ana as a character has been building since before the game’s launch. Production footage showed concept art for a new hero that didn’t make it to the game’s launch, and Sombra was closely tied to the Dorado map, which was at the center of Overwatch’s most recent short, “Hero.”

A new video’s release was teased Tuesday morning on the Overwatch subreddit, when user “bdsqlsz” posted a screenshot of a Chinese website containing a thumbnail of an unreleased Overwatch short.

According to the game’s lore, Overwatch originated with six members, most of whom are already in the game. Reaper, Soldier: 76, Torbjorn, Reinhardt and Mercy were all part of the original faction that fought off the Omnic threat. But that group included two members that are not currently playable characters, leaving Blizzard room to add more character and backstory to the group. Now that Ana has seemingly joined the fray, we’re still waiting on Liao, whose backstory has yet to be explored by Blizzard.
