Since the release of Pokemon Go, one of the biggest mysteries has been how exactly Eevee’s evolution works. Is there any way for the player to control it? Is it completely random? It took a little over a week, but a cunning Reddit user has finally figured out the solution.
As discovered by Reddit user smithnigel, here’s all you have to do to control your Eevee’s evolution: rename the Pokemon prior to evolving it. If you name it Sparky, it will evolve into Jolteon. Name it Rainer and it will evolve into Vaporeon. And name it Pyro and it will evolve into Flareon.
It’s important to note, however, that this trick only works once for each name. After that, the evolutions will start being random.
That really is all it takes! This trick was floated on Reddit a few times over the past week, but it was unclear until a bunch of users around the world tested it out that this actually did work and that the names are really associated with the evolutions.
If you’re unfamiliar with the Pokemon TV show, Rainer, Pyro, Sparky were the names of the Eevee Brothers, who had a Vaporeon, a Flareon and a Jolteon respectively. It’s both a cool little trick and a nice Easter egg for fans of the TV series.
So now that you know how to force Eevee’s evolution, which one of these three should you choose? Many recommend going for Vaporeon, which has the most HP of the three species and will also gain the most CP. Vaporeon is a rather popular Pokemon for that reason; when one recently appeared in Central Park, dozens of people flooded the area and caused a massive stampede, as captured in an incredible viral video last week.
The popularity of this trick also might explain why so many players are on the hunt for Eevee; recent data found that Eevee was the most wanted Pokemon in Alaska, Illinois, Nevada, North Carolina and Texas.
