There’s nothing worse than heading to a Poke Stop in Pokemon Go, only to be unable to collect any items because your bag is full. So what can you do to create more room for items?

Pokemon Go starts you off with a maximum inventory of 350 items. That sounds like a lot, but it’s quite easy to run up against that limit within a few hours of playing, and that’s something you’ll want to avoid. After all, if you visit a Poke Stop with a full inventory, you’ll still get the XP as usual, but you won’t get any of the items.

The most basic solution is to make room by getting rid of some of your existing items. The game allows you to throw out a few of these items without getting rid of everything. Here’s how you can do that:

  • Hit the Poke Ball at the bottom of the screen.
  • Hit “items.”
  • Click the trash icon to the right of an item.
  • Use the plus and minus buttons to decide how many of these items you want to get rid of. The number on screen represents how many of the items you will be discarding, not how many you’ll be left with.
  • Hit “yes.”
  • Continue to do this until the number of items in the top center of the screen is as low as you want it to be.

But if you’re going to be playing the game quite a bit, it will get quite annoying to keep throwing out valuable items, and so at some point you’ll want to invest in a bag upgrade. In the game’s shop, you can purchase one of these upgrades; 200 Poke Coins will increase your inventory capacity by 50 items. You can keep on buying more bag upgrades for the same price of 200 Poke Coins, increasing your capacity by 50 items each time.

How do you get Poke Coins, though? Well, the quickest way is to simply buy them using real money; 100 coins will run you $0.99, meaning every bag upgrade translates to $2.00.

But you can also get Poke Coins for free through regular gameplay, namely by stationing Pokemon at gyms. If you leave one of your Pokemon to defend one of your team’s gyms, you’ll get a bonus of 10 Poke Coins every day that your team maintains control. To earn your bonus, just go to the shop and click on the shield icon in the top right corner.

It might sound difficult to get all the way up to 200 Poke Coins this way, but keep in mind you can get the bonus from multiple gyms at once, meaning if you stationed Pokemon at five friendly gyms, for example, it would only take four days to reach your 200 Poke Coin goal and get yourself a much-needed bag upgrade.
