Pokemon Go‘s recent update changes the number of Pokemon that a trainer can evolve one after another. How many can one evolve within a 30-minute Lucky Egg session?

In Version 0.41.2 for iOS, and & Version 1.11.2 for Android, one of the changes is that the animation that plays as a Pokemon is evolving is now a bit shorter. That might not sound too significant, but it certainly is if you make use of the strategy of gaining XP by activating a Lucky Egg and then evolving as many Pokemon as possible in a half-hour.

The update technically hasn’t been released for all players yet, but a handful of gamers have gotten access to it, and they report that the new animation time is roughly 18 seconds. This is compared to the old version of the game, where the animation time is about 30 seconds.

Your mileage may vary depending on your phone’s connection, but while before you could evolve about 60 to 70 Pokemon in 30 minutes, with the new update, you should be able to evolve between 80 and 90.

As you wait for the update, then, it would be worthwhile to save up your Lucky Eggs and some of your low-leveled Pokemon like Pidgey. Every Pokemon you evolve during a Lucky Egg session gives you 1,000 XP, and so post-update, you can use this method to net nearly 100,000 XP in a half-hour. Depending on where you are in the game, that can often be enough to level up once or twice.

The latest Pokemon Go update adds several features to the game in addition to this faster animation time. You can also now take up to six Pokemon into a friendly gym for training, whereas before, you could only take one. The game now also gives out catch bonuses for earning medals; prior to this update, there was basically no incentive to get medals.

Niantic announced the Pokemon Go update would start rolling out earlier this week, meaning it should hit the app stores any minute now.
