Unholy Night: The Darkness Hunter

Release Date: June 19
Yes, you definitely read that right. The associated platform for this upcoming fighter is indeed the Super NES. Through Kickstarter, a number of developers who worked on Samurai Showdown and The King of Fighters have given the fans the chance to fund their passion project. Even though it didn’t reach its full funding goal, the game’s developers have promised to still make this 2D fighter available for all. Unholy Night: The Darkness Hunter pits a number of monster hunters against each other and other creatures of the night. Along with competitive Vs. play, this SNES fighter features a Story, Survival and Practice Mode. It’s crazy to fathom that a new SNES game is coming out in 2017. Thank God it turned out to be an all-new 2D fighter. Embrace the darkness…

The introduction of Nidhogg to the fighting game space was a welcome one. Its minimalist visual design and focus on one-on-one duels made it more addictive than expected. A sequel is being prepared and it looks quite different than we imagined it would be. Nidhogg 2’s extra cartoony animations (which have been handled by artist Toby Dixon) makes the deathmatch action even more hilarious to watch unfold. Both of the swift-moving avatars onscreen pick up all types of melee weapons, dive kick all over the place and attempt to pick each other off with a well-placed stab. The stages are a lot livelier, but keep your focus intact – that rapier of yours will determine your ultimate fate. JUST THROW IT!

Not familiar with publisher Devolver Digital? Well, you should be! Over the past couple of years, they’ve managed to push out several quality games such as Titan Souls, Not a Hero, OlliOlli etc. They’re looking to keep their goodwill with gamers high in the new year with an action RPG/fighting hybrid called Absolver. The land of Adal is home to a wealth of combatants vying for a position with the Absolver corps. As one of those combatants, you’ll set out to prove your worth by obtaining ability cards and weapons that determine your repertoire of moves. The visual art style evokes the mystic themes the game is going for and the combat looks satisfyingly brutal and majestic.
