‘Darksiders 3’: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

Darksiders 3

The Darksiders series has been rather dormant since it’s last entry, Darksiders 2, back in 2012 for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. Now, just a few short weeks before E3 the latest game in this growing franchise has been revealed first by a leak via Amazon and then officially through IGN. An accompanying trailer released alongside the IGN article offered both new and old fans a glimpse into what the future will hold.

Here’s everything you need to know about Darksiders 3:

1. You Play as Fury, the Sister of Death and War

In the last two entries of Darksiders the user took control of Death and War, two Horsemen of the Apocalypse who were tasked with keeping the balance between good and evil. However, in Darksiders 3 the player will assume control of Fury who is the red headed sister of these two and is a mage. Her weapon of choice is a power whip that has a rather long range and can deal out a ton of damage. She is known as the “Rider of the Black Horse” which in Revelations is actually Famine’s steed of choice.

Where things get interesting is that in the trailer we can see War is chained up and an unknown narrator speaks of his betrayal. Given that Death went through an entire game to prove War’s innocence, it will be interesting to see how Fury’s relationship with War differs. Clearly, she is not as opposed to seeing this Horseman in shackles and pain.

2. Fury’s Mission is to Hunt Down the Seven Deadly Sins

Darksiders 3

While little is known about the core characters and plot to Darksiders 3, what we do know is that Fury is tasked with hunting down the Seven Deady Sins. These entities, which are described as both “…mystical creatures to degenerated beings.” have escaped the underworld and are now creating havoc on Earth. Seen as a “..the enemies of existence itself.” these seven figures will more than likely act as various bosses throughout Darksiders 3. This narrative is more direct than the last game, which was focused on the relationship between Death and War for the majority of the title. On the official Darksiders 3 page the story is described as the following:

Return to an apocalyptic Earth in Darksiders III, a hack-n-slash Action Adventure where players assume the role of FURY in her quest to hunt down and dispose of the Seven Deadly Sins. The most unpredictable and enigmatic of the Four Horsemen, FURY must succeed where many have failed – to bring balance to the forces that now ravage Earth. Darksiders III is the long-anticipated, third chapter in the critically-acclaimed Darksiders franchise.

It’s important to remember that Darksiders 3 doesn’t follow any specific faith, meaning that some aspects have been changed such as who the four horsemen are. Instead of War, Death, Famine, and Pestilence, this alternate universe’s riders are War, Death, Fury, and Strife. This means that the seven deadly sins we traditionally know, could not be the same ones in Darksiders 3.

3. Gunfire Games is Developing ‘Darksiders 3’ with THQ Nordic Publishing it

Darksiders 3, Gunfire Games

Confirmed today both by the trailer and developers themselves, it turns out that Gunfire Games are the ones creating Darksiders 3. This studio is partially made up by the remnants of Vigil Games, who were the developers behind both Darksiders and Darksiders 2. Formed in 2015, Gunfire Games have worked on a number of titles including Dead and Buried, From Others Sun, and the remastered version of Darksiders 2.

In their developer spotlight, it’s revealed that Gunfire Games is made up of a staff of “…around 38 people.” and wanted to be in a position where “…we control our destiny.” This marks the studios first major entry into the Darksiders series in nearly 5 years and will be making a majority of their announcements through IGN.

4. Fury Will Use Magic and The World Is Described as “Open-Ended”

Darksiders 3

While Darksiders 3 is confirmed to be a hack-n-slash title, players will be able to utilize a plethora of abilities in order to turn the tide of battle. Her magic is described as being able “…to unleash her various forms…” with each one offering Fury new approach options, powers, weapons, and attacks. Presumably, this is to allow for a greater amount of depth and strategy to her moves, however, it’s unclear what exactly is required to changed between forms. Fury’s default weapon appears to be a powerful whip that is sharp enough to decapitate large demons, which is always nice to know.

In terms of the level design, Darksiders 3 world is considered open-ended which means that the environments themselves may not all be available to run around in right from the start. By the description offered on the Darksiders 3 page, the world itself seems to be more of a hybrid between modern open world games and the Castlevania style levels that require players to return with different gear to unlock larger areas.
