New Trademark Suggests N64 Classic Edition Is on the Way

Nintendo 64

With the runaway success of the NES Classic Edition, even though it could never meet the demand of consumers, Nintendo announced a follow-up to the console with the Super NES Classic Edition. Now, a new trademark in Europe seems to suggest that Nintendo is already preparing for an N64 Classic Edition.

The trademark in question was filed July 18 and features the Nintendo 64 controller’s design. Nintendo filed similar trademarks before the announcements of the Super NES and Super NES Classic. Either this means Nintendo has something bigger up its sleeve or they are planning on releasing the N64 Classic Edition next year. For right now, all we have is the controller trademark so take that however you want.

Nintendo 64 Classic Edition

It looks to be that Nintendo will continue releasing these classic edition consoles as time goes on. It’s unclear when the trend will stop because once we hit the Wii, we no longer find consoles that are hard to find. One could even argue that a Nintendo 64 is still easy to find on the open market.

While the Super NES was arguably the height of Nintendo’s power, the Nintendo 64 still featured some great games. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Super Mario 64 come to mind. The N64 was also the birth of the long-running Mario Party series and also marked the time when Mario Kart really came into its own with Mario Kart 64. If Nintendo does decide to go through and create an N64 Classic Edition, there are definitely some worthwhile games to put on it.

The Super NES Classic Edition is giving players the never released Star Fox 2. It’s possible Nintendo could give us something like that with the N64 Classic. Mother 3 anyone? We’re just kidding, we know that’s never being localized.

All of this is just speculation at this point so don’t believe it 100 percent until we receive an official announcement from Nintendo. One thing we’re curious about is what a GameCube Classic Edition would look like. The GameCube was already a tiny console, so we’re wondering if it could get any smaller.
