‘Pokemon Go’ Ho-Oh: Best Moves & Counters in Raids

Niantic Ho-Oh is in Pokemon Go

Ho-Oh will be in Pokemon Go until December 12, so you only have a limited amount of time to defeat the Legendary in raids. While Ho-Oh is still around, how can you have your best chance at success against the Pokemon in Raids? Trainers are glad that Ho-Oh is in regular raids and not EX raids, so that by itself increases your odds. Here are the best moves and counters that players have noted so far.

According to stats accumulated by GamePress and other trainers, the following are the best “supreme” counters to use against Ho-Oh. Raikou with Thunder Shock and Wild Charge, Zapdos with Charge Beam and Thunder Bolt, Omastar with Rock Throw/Water Gun and Rock Slide/Rock Blast/Hydro Pump, or Golem with Rock Throw and Stone Edge/Rock Blast.

Here are a few more specific suggestions. If you’re encountering a Ho-Oh with Steel Wing and Solar Beam, trainers suggest Raikou (preferable TS/Wild Charge), Dragonite (preferable DB/Outrage), Lugia, or Zapdos (preferably Thunderbolt). Gyarados is also an option with Bite/HP.

Trainers typically can beat Ho-Oh with a team of six if they have a particularly powerful group of Pokemon. But if Ho-Oh is sporting solar beam, the Pokemon is much tougher to defeat and will need more trainers against it. Players have noted that Solar Beam can destroy some otherwise tough Pokemon, like Golems and Tyranitars.

When facing up against Ho-Oh, the “good counters” include Dragonite with Dragon Tail/Dragon Breath and Outrage/Dragon Claw/Hurricane, Tyranitar with Bite and Stone Edge, Vaporeon with Water Gun and Hydro Pump/Aqua Tail, or Gyarados with Bite/Dragon Breath/Dragon Tail and Hydro Pump.

Are Lugias and Raikous worth powering up to go against Ho-Oh? GamePress votes yes for Raikou, but no for Lugia — use Dragonite instead. If you’re looking for even more details about raid counters, including breakpoints, check out the detailed tables on Reddit here.

Redditors have also put together some really nice infographics that illustrate the best moves and counters. Here is a selection to start. From Redditor Pancakeser:

In general, Pokemon really need to be Level 30+ to have a shot against Ho-Oh. And if Ho-Oh has Solar Beam, then Tyranitars and Golems are dust. If you’re not sure how to figure out what level your Pokemon is, you can use any IV calculator to find out. You can go to this website and plug in your CP, HP, and dust needed to power up to find your IV and level. Or you can use an app on your phone, such as Calcy IV on Android or Poke Genie on iOS.
