Fortnite: Battle Royale had a big announcement at this year’s Game Awards. Epic Games teased a new game mode for an announcement today and we learned that is a limited time 50 versus 50 mode.
This mode will be available from December 8 to December 17 and will feature full 50 on 50 matches that will sure to create some epic moments for everyone involved. Fortnite: Battle Royale has done a lot to stray away from the traditional battle royale format but this looks to be the biggest shift since.
There are special rules to help make this mode as user friendly as possible. In what should be a pleasant change for many – there will be no team killing. The mode can be enjoyed by queuing solo, duo or in a squad. Here are the special rules laid out by Epic Games.
How does it work?
Just load up Battle Royale and select the 50v50 playlist. You can jump into the mode solo or with up to three friends. Once the Battle Bus gets flying, you’ll see your squad on the map and communicate like a normal squad/duo match. You’ll also see green markers on the map and above the heads of the remaining 50-player team. The circle closes in. Last team standing wins.
Are there any special rules?
- Friendly Fire Off (But you will still see hit indicators.)
- Limited visibility of non-squad teammates.
- Squad VoIP only.
- You can revive ANY friendly teammates.
- You won’t see non-squad teammates until you land.
You won’t be able to drop in with all 50 of your teammates and land in the same spot unless you get very lucky. The green arrows indicating teammates will not appear until you land so there’s a chance you’ll still land into very hostile territory. Can you imagine the carnage that will be Retail Row?
Epic Games promises more events like this will come in the future. Could we possibly see teams of 25 in the future?
More updates have hit as well including the addition of assists and the sort. After you’ve been eliminated (or after you win) you’ll be able to see your results that will give you a variety of stats you might be interested in.
These stats include the following:
- Eliminations
- Assists
- Revives
- Accuracy
- Hits
- Critical Hits
- Distance Traveled
- Materials Gathered
- Materials Used
- Damage Taken
- Damage To Players
- Damage To Structures
Epic calls this the first iteration so it’s likely that we will see this post-match stats page get fleshed out in the future. The leaderboards and stats page are getting reworked in an upcoming update as well that will help things become more user friendly. To put it bluntly, the current leaderboards page leaves a lot of desired. It lacks things such as a kill/death ratio that are very common in most other shooters. At the very least, it sounds like these changes are on the way.
