Hearthstone Dungeon Run: 3 Tips For Success

Hearthstone is adding a new mode on Thursday, adding the single player “Dungeon Run” to it’s menu of options. Dungeon Run is a “roguelike” card game, meaning every run is randomized. Players choose a class, get a small assortment of cards, and then gain more cards and abilities as they defeat increasingly difficult bosses.

To make things more interesting, Twitch is hosting a mini-tournament for aspiring Dungeon Runners. Any streamer can qualify by beating the mode with all nine classes in a single run, with the eventual champion awarded a share of over $30,000 in prizes.

But all of that means nothing if you can’t overcome the first stage. So here’s a few DAY ONE tips to help you succeed in the dungeon. Happy hunting!

1. Treasure/Loot Synergy

This is the most important aspect of creating a Dungeon Run deck. Treasure are single cards that have crazy game-altering abilities. You get a few of them in every run. Loot are the groupings of cards you choose from at the end of every single level.

It’s important that your treasure plays into your loot. For example, if you’re playing Paladin, you might want the Treasure that upgrades your hero power and reduces it’s cost (Justicar’s Ring). With that ability, you’ll want lots of buff cards that can strengthen the flood of minions you’ll be able to play. There are hundreds of Class/Treasure/Loot combinations, so don’t commit to a single strategy!

2. Don’t Go All-In on Loot

When choosing loot, each group of cards will have some sort of deck archetype. For example, one group might have a pack of spells, one might have Murlocs, and one might have your class quest. While it makes sense in the early game to build synergy, it’s important to have some sort of late-game for the bigger bosses in the run. Late-run bosses have upwards of 60 hit points, so it’s good to make sure you have some heavy-hitting options in the late game.

While choosing big minions is fun, it’s also important to think about the decreased deck size in this game mode. Dungeon Run starts you with only ten cards, and for the large part of the game you’ll be playing with a small deck. With that in mind, a 6-cost card could really get stuck in your hand with that kind of pace.

3. Check The Opposing Hero Power Before Starting

Before each round, a random boss is selected. Check the full boss list here. Before the match starts, be sure to check out the opponent’s unique hero power so you can have a better idea of your strategy. For example, if the boss summons small minions as their power, you might want to include some removal in your opening hand. Knowing the opponent’s hero power makes it much easier to choose an opening hand, and gives you an advantage early in the fight.
