Will Nightflyers Stop GRRM’s Winds of Winter?

George R. R. Martin just announced on his blog that a Nightflyers pilot has been greenlit by SyFy. This is a series based on GRRM’s 1980 novella, a scifi-horror hybrid. Fans are freaking out, thinking this means that GRRM has yet another project that will be taking him away from finishing Winds of Winter.

That’s not the case.

Martin is obligated by his contract to stay exclusive to HBO. This means he won’t be involved in Nightflyers‘ development at all.

But this doesn’t mean he won’t find plenty of other things to distract himself from finishing Winds of Winter. First, there are the Game of Thrones proposed spinoffs that he’s helping with. These are with HBO, so there’s nothing in his contract to stop him from working on those. There have also been a few hints here and there that Martin may be working on a different series with HBO that has nothing to do with the Game of Thrones universe.

When fans first heard about Nightflyers, they reacted angrily, thinking it would take him away from Winds of Winter. One fan on Twitter chided fans for this reaction:

But fans are still, understandably, bothered that Winds of Winter isn’t out yet, even if it has nothing to do with Nightflyers. In fact, some are wondering if the popular Game of Thrones book series will ever be finished.

Here are some fans’ reactions on Twitter to having no new news about The Winds of Winter:
