Pokemon Go: What to Do if Your Pokemon Comes Back Without Coins

A new gym update is coming to Pokemon Go. (Niantic)

The latest Pokemon Go update has left a lot of players confused about how to receive coins from gyms. Theoretically, when your Pokemon returns home to you, it should reward you with all of the coins that it has amassed during its time defending the gym. But that doesn’t always happen, so what is a player to do when they don’t receive their coin bonus?

First of all, it should be noted that you only receive coins from a Pokemon if it was in a gym for an hour or more. So if your Pokemon returns home to you after being stationed in a gym for less than an hour, and it doesn’t have any coins, that’s not a glitch; it’s how Niantic has intentionally designed the game. This is something that a lot of players have complained about, as if you live in a highly-populated area where gyms have a quick turnover rate, you may find it difficult to collect any coins.

However, if the Pokemon was in the gym for more than an hour and you haven’t received any coins, that is a glitch. A number of issues have arisen with this massive new gym update, and this is one of them.

So if you aren’t receiving the coin bonus as soon as your Pokemon comes home, try resetting the game. On an iOS device, you can force quit the app by tapping the home button twice and swiping up on Pokemon Go. On an Android device, you can force quit by going to settings, choosing apps, going to running, and touching the force stop button next to Pokemon Go.

If that doesn’t work, just try waiting it out, checking back on your coin inventory in about a half-hour and seeing if the coin has arrived. Almost every player who has complained of not getting coins did later receive them, so you’ll just have to be patient, knowing that you will get that coin at some point.
