As over 100 million viewers settle in for Sunday’s game, they may be excited to learn that Transparent star Jeffrey Tambor is starring alongside Patriot’s tight end Rob Grankowski in Tide’s Super Bowl commercial.
In the commercial, Tambor plays a customer at Gronk’s dry cleaners. Speaking with the actor on Friday before the spot aired, NewsWeek asked Tambor if doing a Super Bowl ad is considered a rite of passage in Hollywood. He responded, “We were just talking about that. I was wondering when this surge of [big Super Bowl commercials started]. It’s cool. I’m 70 years old and I’m in a Super Bowl commercial. And I’m with Rob Gronkowski, who’s arguably a legend.” He added on that Gronk fared much better on screen than he would on the field. When Metro UK asked Tambor what it was like hanging out with Gronk, he said, “Oh, Gronk was great… And what a good actor he was. He was terrific. He’s like a little kid. A tall little kid. A little tall kid.”
The cost of Super Bowl commercials hit an all-time high this year. According to the New York Times, it cost $5 million to purchase a 30-second ad during the Super Bowl compared to the $4.8 million it cost in 2016.
