Bellator Fighting Championships today announced a non-title bout between Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez (19-2) and UFC veteran Josh Neer (27-9-1). While an exact date isn’t known, Bellator has indicated that the bout will take place on one of the nationally-televised Bellator shows in May.
Bellator’s calling it a “Super Fight,” and promises more non-tournament, non-title catchweight bouts in the future. The bouts will pit the tournament champions from Bellator’s first season with the top available competition. The Alvarez/Neer bout will take place at 160 pounds.
Neer’s last appearance for the UFC came in October at UFC 104, when he was released from the company after losing to Gleison Tibau. He has won two straight fights since being cut.
Alvarez, one of the highest-ranked lightweights in the world, won the Bellator lightweight title with a submission victory over Toby Imada last June.
