A light heavyweight match up between Jon “Bones” Jones and Vladimir Matyushenko is reportedly in the making for the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s second event on the Versus network. TheGarv.com first reported the story stating that, “Sources close to Team Bombsquad have agreed that the bout is verbally agreed to by both camps and all that’s left is for the contracts to be signed.”
Jones, whose last showing in the Octagon was quite the display to say the least, holds a record of 10-1 and is rolling off the absolute demolition of Brandon Vera at “UFC on Versus 1”. Prior to the victory, Jones lost to Matt Hamill via disqualification at “The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale” in a bout he was clearly dominating. Yet regardless of the loss, Jones has grown into one of the UFC’s largest prospects and most dangerous, versatile fighters.
Coming off a close split-decision victory over Eliot Marshall at “UFC on Versus 1”, Matyushenko is looking to further build on his three-fight winning streak, which includes victories over Igor Pokrajac and Jason Lambert. He has only lost two times since the year 2003.
The match up is clearly a chance for Matyushenko to declare his relevancy in the UFC light heavyweight division, while it is also an opportunity for Jones to expand on his meteoric rise.
“UFC on Versus 2” is expected to take place on August 1 in Salt Lake City, Utah. John Howard vs. Jake Ellenberger, along with Takanori Gomi vs. Joe Stevenson have been rumored for the card, though nothing has been made official yet.
