World Extreme Cagefighting announced a four-fight main card for WEC 49 earlier this month, but the completed product is still coming together, as a lightweight match between Karen Darabedyan and Will Kerr has been tapped for the promotion’s Canadian debut. News of the bout was confirmed by MMAjunkie.com earlier today.
Prior to his submission loss to Bart Palaszewski at “WEC 47: Bowles vs.Cruz”, Darabedyan was on the rise in the WEC’s heaviest weight division with a seven-fight winning streak. However, after nearly shutting Palaszewski down due to strikes, the submission ace sent Darabedyan back to the drawing boards.
However, Darabedyan is not the only one looking to right the ship in this match up. In his WEC debut this past November, Kerr was on the receiving end of a Kamal Shalorus beatdown, losing for the first time since 2006. The knockout ended a five-fight winning streak.
The two lightweights in search of redemption have fallen on a card headlined by two other lightweights who are looking for a shot at the 155-pound belt. Former champion Jamie Varner will try to halt the meteoric rise of Kamal Shalorus, as the two battle for the title of top contender. WEC 49 is set for June 20 at Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta Canada. The event will be the WEC’s breakthrough into Canadian territory.
