Valencia Withdraws From WEC 49 Bout Against Wineland

The WEC 49 official fight card was completed yesterday, but, just one day later, the promotion is back to the drawing boards, as Charlie Valencia has been forced to withdraw from his fight with Eddie Wineland due to an injury. The news was reported by MMAjunkie.com earlier today. The injury is rumored to involve complications with his shoulder.

The bout was set to make the main card of the evening and the Versus broadcast. However, the WEC is now forced to search for a replacement for Wineland. Fortunately, given the date of the event (June 20), the promotion certainly has plenty of time to find a suitable opponent for the first-ever bantamweight champion of the WEC.

Wineland is looking to return back to the top-tier status he held years ago. He is 2-1 in the promotion since returning in 2009 with wins over Manny Tapia and George Roop. The loss came against Rani Yahya, when Wineland was submitted early in the first round.

WEC 49 is set to follow the highly successful pay-per-view event “Aldo vs. Faber”, and will be the promotion’s first ever event on Canadian soil. The Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada will play host to the event, which is headlined by a lightweight contender match between former lightweight champion Jamie Varner and the fast-rising Kamal Shalorus.
