Mike Pierce vs. Amilcar Alves Set For UFC 118

A welterweight match up between Mike Pierce and UFC-newcomer Amilcar Alves has been booked for UFC 118 in Massachusetts this August. The match up was reported by MMANews.com earlier today.

Alves, who currently owns a professional record of 11-1, is riding a dominant eight-fight winning streak. The Brazilian, hailing from the same camp as Jose Aldo and several other Brazilian stars, last lost in 2007 when he was submitted by rear naked choke.

In his first fight in 2010 and UFC debut, Alves will face rising welterweight Pierce, who earned a unanimous decision victory over Julio Paulino at “UFC on Versus 1.” Pierce debuted with the UFC at “UFC Fight Night 19” last September with a unanimous decision victory over Brock Larson, but failed to build upon his six-fight winning streak, losing to Jon Fitch at UFC 107. While he failed to defeat the welterweight contender, Pierce managed to challenge the dominant wrestler from American Kickboxing Academy.

UFC 118 is set for the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts on August 28 and features a main event between UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and the longtime champion BJ Penn in a rematch from their UFC 112 bout. Also, former-boxing champion James Toney is expected to make his MMA debut on the card opposite Randy Couture.
