Lightweights will meet on June 8 preliminary card

A pair of fighters who made successful UFC debuts on the first Fuel TV card will now try their luck at an FX-branded event.

Tim Means and Justin Salas will meet at the UFC on FX event on June 8 in Florida. UFC officials recently announced the fight, which is expected to be a part of the preliminary card of UFC on FX: Johnson vs. McCall.

That card, officially UFC’s Harley-Davidson Hometown Throwdown on FX as part of a sponsorship promotion with the motorcycle company, will take place June 8 at the BankAtlantic Center in the Fort Lauderdale suburb of Sunrise. It will be the UFC’s first trip to the Sunshine State in more than three years and will be the promotion’s third main card to air live on the FX cable network.

Means (17-3-1, 1-0 UFC) is coming off a win in his his UFC debut in February. He outpointed Bernardo Magalhaes, who also was making his promotional debut, for a unanimous decision victory at UFC on Fuel TV: Sanchez vs. Ellenberger, which took place in Omaha, Neb. That win stretched the former King of the Cage lightweight champion’s unbeaten streak to 10. His last loss came in March 2010. Two of Means’ three career losses have came at the hands of eventual UFC fighters Spencer Fisher and Luke Caudillo.

Salas (10-3, 1-0 UFC) also made his UFC debut on the Fuel card in Omaha and beat Anton Kuivanen by unanimous decision. That stretched his winning streak to six fights, including a win over UFC veteran Rob Emerson to win the Full Force Fighting lightweight title last year. Salas trains at the Grudge Training Center near Denver.

UFC on FX 3 will feature a main event flyweight semifinal rematch between Demetrious Johnson and Ian McCall. The two 125-pounders will meet again to finally get some closure on their first fight, which took last month in Sydney, Australia, at UFC on FX: Alves vs. Kampmann. The two met in the semifinals of the UFC’s four-man tournament to determine its first flyweight champion. The winner will face Joseph Benavidez for the UFC’s first flyweight title later this year.

In addition to the Johnson-McCall fight on the FX broadcast, which will begin at 9 p.m. Eastern on June 8, fans have a chance to vote for the fight they want to see open the main card. Fan voting at ufc.com/hometownthrowdown is between a bantamweight fight featuring Eddie Wineland and Scott Jorgensen, welterweights Mike Pierce and Carlos Eduardo Rocha and welterweights Seth Baczynski and Lance Benoist. As of late Tuesday morning, the Wineland-Jorgensen bout is leading the voting with 39 percent of the tally.
