Strikeforce Medical Suspensions: Daniel Cormier, Josh Barnett Out Up To Six Months

A total of nine fighters have been given medical suspensions following their Saturday fights at the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Final, including both main event competitors.

Daniel Cormier and Josh Barnett each could be on the shelf for six months with possible fractures, and co-main event lightweight title challenger Josh Thomson could be out for just as long. The suspensions were released on Monday to HeavyMMA by the California State Athletic Commission.

The Strikeforce card took place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., and featured Cormier dominating Barnett in the main event to win the heavyweight tournament. And Gilbert Melendez defended his lightweight title with a controversial split decision win over Thomson.

The full list of fighter suspensions is below:

Daniel Cormier: Suspended 180 days with no contact for 180 days unless cleared by doctor (possible right finger fracture). Additionally, suspended 60 days, with no contact, unless cleared by doctor (left eye laceration).
Josh Barnett: Suspended 180 days with no contact for 180 days unless cleared by doctor (possible left hand fracture). Additionally, suspended 60 days, with no contact, unless cleared by doctor (multiple facial laceration).
Josh Thomson: Suspended 180 days with no contact for 180 days unless cleared by doctor (possible left knee fracture, possible right hand fracture).
Isaac Vallie-Flagg: Suspended 60 days with no contact for 60 days unless cleared by doctor (laceration in “right south” orbital area).
Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante:
Suspended 180 days with no contact for 180 days unless cleared by doctor (possible left shoulder ligament injury).
Virgil Zwicker: Suspended 180 days with no contact for 180 days unless cleared by doctor (possible left middle finger fracture). Additionally, suspended 30 days with no contact for 30 days for a hard bout.
Yuri Villefort: Suspended 180 days with no contact for 180 days unless cleared by doctor (possible right knee ligament injury).
Bobby Green: Suspended 180 days with no contact for 180 days unless cleared by doctor (possible third finger fracture on left hand).
James Terry: Suspended 60 days with no contact for 6- days unless cleared by doctor (possible nasal fracture).

  • Bobby Green: Suspended 180 days or until cleared by physician for possible fracture on left ring finger.
  • James Terry: Suspended 60 days or until cleared by physician for possible nasal fracture and laceration.
