Flyweight title fight added to UFC 152

The first-ever UFC flyweight title fight has been officially announced.

Joseph Benavidez and Demetrious Johnson will meet for the 125 lb. title at UFC 152 on September 22 in Toronto.

UFC officials confirmed the news over the weekend, slotting the championship tilt as the main event for the card.

Benavidez and Johnson earned their spots in the bout after moving to the final of the promotion’s four-man flyweight tournament. Benavidez defeated Yasuhiro Urushitani this past March with a brutal technical knockout finish, sending him through to the title bout.

Meanwhile, Johnson’s path was much more difficult, as he had to fight Ian McCall on two occasions to earn what Benavidez had. Johnson and McCall fought to a draw back in March, but a scoring mishap caused the initial decision to be a win for Johnson.

The two flyweights had a rematch this past June, and Johnson earned the unanimous decision to move onward in the tournament.
