Lightweight contenders meet this December

A lightweight bout between Gray Maynard and Joe Lauzon is official for UFC 155.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship announced the news on Monday.

UFC 155 is expected to take place on December 29 in Las Vegas. It will serve as the promotion’s annual year-end show.

Lauzon last competed at “UFC on FOX 4” this month against Jamie Varner. He defeated the former WEC lightweight champion via third round submission.

The Massachusetts native now holds the top spot for most Fight Night bonuses and is regarded as one of the most entertaining fighters in the promotion.

Meanwhile, Maynard returns to the cage after an uninspiring decision win against Clay Guida in what could possibly go down as the most disappointing main events of the year.

Prior to that victory, he fought Frankie Edgar twice for the lightweight title, fighting to a draw in their UFC 125 contest and losing via knockout in their final match up.

Maynard remains one of only two fighters to ever defeat Edgar, the other being current UFC champion Benson Henderson, who has defeated the former champion twice.

The bout will likely be featured on the main card of UFC 155. The pay-per-view portion of the event is expected to be headlined by a heavyweight title rematch between champion Junior dos Santos and top contender Cain Velasquez.
