“Cro Cop” training, looks for comeback

Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic is looking forward to a return to mixed martial arts.

The PRIDE legend is training at least once a day, though mostly twice per day, and claims he never retired from the sport.

MMAjunkie.com and USA Today Sports spoke to Filipovic earlier this week.

“I’m training every day,” Filipovic told MMAjunkie.com. “I usually train twice a day, and Thursdays and Sundays are supposed to be my days off. But even on those days I’m training at least once. I have to do at least one session each day to be happy.”

Filipovic’s career seemed to come to an end after a technical knockout loss to Roy Nelson UFC 137 back in October of 2011. The loss was his third straight, and all three of those defeats came via stoppage.

Following the contest, his UFC contract was up and the promotion expressed no interest in re-signing the legendary striker, as he struggled mightily during his UFC stint. It seemed the era of “Cro Cop” had long passed and that the heavyweight was walking away from the sport for good.

However, Filipovic does not see it that way.

“Concerning my retirement from the UFC, I said it was my last fight for the UFC and last fight on the present contract, but I did not say, ‘I won’t keep fighting,'” Filipovic added. “I never said that. I think the best thing to say is that I was born to fight.”

The renowned striker is 27-10 with two draws and one no contest in 40 professional fights. Now, it seems Filipovic looks to make it back into the cage for fight number 41.
