Former PRIDE lightweight champ Takanori Gomi has signed a multi-fight deal to compete for the UFC.
That’s according to Ariel Helwani from MMAFighting.com, who issued the report last night.
Gomi has long been considered one of the top lightweight talents on the planet. The “Fireball Kid” has struggled in recent years in losing two of his past four bouts, but is hopeful that a jump to North America and the massive UFC machine will help change his fortunes. Gomi fought current UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn at a “Rumble on the Rock” event back in 2003. And even though Penn scored the victory that night, there’s no doubt that Gomi will be given every opportunity to work his way to a title shot in the challenger-depleted lightweight division.
