Great boxing leads to submission victory
Just like his big brother did four years ago, Nate Diaz scored an impressive victory over Takanori Gomi to kick off the main card at UFC 135.
Returning to lightweight after a four-fight move to welterweight, Diaz utilized his reach expertly, finding his range and picking apart the former Pride champion. Midway through the opening round, Diaz landed flush and hurt Gomi, and that was the beginning of the end.
While Gomi valiantly tried to battle through the barrage of punches coming his way, Diaz kept the pressure on throughout. Forced to try to work from inside Diaz’s guard because he was getting peppered on the feet, Gomi had no answers for the jiu-jitsu game of the Ultimate Fighter winner.
The lanky Diaz quickly worked his hips into position to lock up a triangle choke, cinching it in tight. As Gomi rolled to try to find breathing room, Diaz quickly transitioned to a straight armbar, drawing a tap from “The Fireball Kid.”
This was the best Diaz has looked to date in his career. It’s easy to forget that the younger half of the Diaz Brothers is still just 26-years-old. Back at his optimum weight and looking impressive, this could be the start of a strong run in the 155 pound division for the Stockton, California native.
