2010 Summer Movie Guide

Summer Movie Guide

With last week’s release of Iron Man 2, the Summer movie season has officially started. This is when the studios typically get their big-budget blockbusters into theaters to rake in the megacash. In this feature, I’ll run down each of the major releases week-by-week and let you know whether to line up or take the pass.

Iron Man 2 – The action might take second place to the dialogue in this Marvel superhero sequel, with Robert Downey Jr. once again stepping into the steel shoes of Tony Stark. The babe quotient is also upped with Scarlett Johansson as the sultry Black Widow. Mickey Rourke plays metal-grilled Russian villain Whiplash and of course there’s a shadowy conspiracy of arms dealers to contend with as well. Watch the trailer. Read our review.

Robin Hood – Ridley Scott tackles the public-domain tale of one of England’s greatest rogues, with Russell Crowe cast as the titular archer. A more nuanced script that moves the story away from a simple black and white, good and bad morality has been promised, as well as some serious arrow-shooting action. Watch the trailer.

MacGruberSaturday Night Live sketches often have a rough time transitioning to the big screen, but this one is thankfully looking to be more Wayne’s World and less A Night At The Roxbury. Lonely Island’s Jorma Taccone directs, with Will Forte playing the titular hero and Kristen Wiig and Ryan Phillippe as his sidekicks. Special bonus is Val Kilmer as the movie’s bad guy. Watch the trailer.

Shrek Forever After – Fourth installment in Dreamworks’ cash cow, and supposedly the final one, which is probably a good idea as the jokes are pretty stale by now. When Shrek, nostalgic for his wild ogre days, signs a contract with Rumplestiltskin to have one last day of people-scaring fun, he’s whisked into an alternate universe where all of his adventures never happened – sort of like Lost. Can he restore the world to its rightful state? Watch the trailer.

Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time Jake Gyllenhaal buffs up to play the classic video game character in this desert adventure, also starring the gorgeous Gemma Arterton. When the Sands of Time, a mystical artifact that can alter the flow of chronology, falls into the hands of an evil vizier, the Prince must kick some serious sand to get it back. Directed by Mike Newell. Watch the trailer.

Sex And The City 2 – Your girlfriend might take you to see this, so be prepared. Sarah Jessica Parker returns as horse-faced egomaniac Carrie Bradshaw, along with all of her other nattering harridan friends, and they have adventures involving true love, buying shoes, and waiting for their ovaries to fall out. I’m nauseous already. Watch the trailer.
