“…And suddenly the screams of a baby born in Hell!” is the tagline of this oh so tasteless horror outing, the last Hammer horror film (1976) until the banner was resurrected with Let Me In (2010). Nastassja Kinski plays a young nun with a mysterious Catholic (what else?) order that’s actually a front for a group of Satanists; the diabolical Father Michael Rayner, played by Christopher Lee (who else?), has plans for her on her 18th birthday that involves giving birth to the spawn of Ol’ Scratch himself (Kinski was only 15 when the movie was made, but who was counting?). To the Devil… a Daughter is as over-the-top and ridiculous as it sounds (actually, probably even more so), but also as unnerving and disturbing as only a Hammer horror movie sometimes manages to be. Peter Sykes directs this dark fable as if his life depended on it… and maybe it did.
