Bad dog! Max is a really bad dog, actually, especially when he unhinges his jaw like a snake and swallows a damn cat whole. What the hell kind of dog is this, anyway? This mighty Tibetan Mastiff is the subject of genetic experimentation, and when he escapes from the laboratory of mad scientist Dr. Jarret (Lance Henriksen), he ends up in the home of a cute animal-loving TV personality (Ally Sheedy) who finds even her own sense of compassion put to the test when he starts showing off his mean streak. An outlandish animal attack thriller that isn’t over-the-top enough to be funny or extreme enough to satisfy horror fans, Man’s Best Friend is condemned to be a mostly unloved oddity of the movie world that still manages to distinguish (and salvage) itself with a handful of truly inspired moments, not the least of which is the aforementioned cat-swallowing and a doggie seduction scene that will leave you howling. One of the taglines is a keeper, too: “He’ll bite the hand that feeds him… and then he’ll eat the rest.” Yes, he will, especially if “the rest” is a damn cat.
