A 50-year-old nanny in New York City’s ritzy Upper West Side stabbed two children dead before turning the knife on herself Thursday evening, police say.

The mom, Marina Krim, came home with 3-year-old daughter Nessie to the posh La Rochelle building and found the nanny, Yoselyn Ortega, with a slashed throat and wrists. Krim’s other two kids, Leo, 2, and Lulu, 6, were lying in a pool of blood in the bathtub — covered in stab wounds.

Krim had come home early after Ortega never showed up to meet the mom for Lulu (Lucia) and Leo’s swim lessons. She discovered the horrifying scene and broke down — but still had the presence to wrap the nanny’s bloody throat in a towel.

Doorman Glen Loody heard screaming and called 911. He tells the NY Post: “She was crying. She was screaming.”

The Daily Mail quotes neighbor Rima Starr: “There were bloodcurdling screams from a woman. There was some kind of screaming about, ‘You slit her throat!’ It was horrible.”

The kids were rushed to the hospital but soon pronounced dead. The bloody nanny also was hospitalized while in police custody. She was unresponsive and possibly had taken sleeping pills.

Grandmother Karen Krim told the Post that Ortega had been with the family for a year and was hired after an intense vetting process. Both parents even spent nine days with the nanny’s family in the Dominican Republic. But Ortega’s niece Katherine Garcia said her aunt had been “acting kind of nervous lately.”

Marina Krim wrote a parenting blog [link removed] called Life with the Krim Kids about the wonders of raising her young family. Its contents only hammer home the heartbreak of the tragedy. Some excerpts:

One of the best parts of my day is after I drop both girls off at school and have 3 precious hours with little Lito all to myself. Ok, I’m near getting cheesy I adore this boy so much!!!Lito, I must say, is a very clever little boy. He is super talkative and just has a million thoughts running through his brain and can express himself amazingly well for an almost-2 year old. I’m thinking he could be a Mini-Kevin.

When I ask Lulu what she wants to be when she grows up, she always says she wants to be a Mama. And she is going to be a really good one.
