9-Year-Old Mother May be 12 or 13; Stepdad is Baby’s Father

Dafne's Baby

There are suspicions that a 9-year-old Mexican girl who gave birth to a baby may be much older than she claims to be — and the father of the baby is her stepdad and not a teen boyfriend.

ABC News reports that the girl, Dafne, may actually be 12 years old or possibly older based on DNA results. The parents are being questioned as to why they lied about their daughter’s age and whether the stepfather, now suspected to be the father, should be charged for rape.

Dafne's Family in Mexico

Abundio Guadalupe Garcia, 44, was arrested after admitting that he had sex with Dafne twice last year, according to Mexican newspaper Milenio. As the story goes, Dafne’s mother never knew about the affair. She believed that the baby’s father was Dafne’s 17-year-old boyfriend, who may not even be real, based on comments of neighbors who say they’ve never heard of him.

Zoquipan Hospital

Dafne discovered she was pregnant in November 2012 and delivered a healthy baby girl in January 27, 2013, through a C-section operation. “Due to her young age and to the fact that her body was not ready to give birth,” said Dr. Enrique Rabago, director of Zoquipan Hospital, “the medical team decided a C-section was the best option.”

Why would the parents lie about Dafne’s age? One theory was that the mom lied about Dafne’s age in order to admit her into school. Another theory is that the mother, a prostitute, wanted her daughter to work in the sex trade.

Dafne has a questionable birth certificate that states she was born on March 6, 2003, making her 9.

Prosecutor Jorge Villasenor told Milenio that the case is still unsolved. Dafne was not fully aware of her actions, making the case into a rape or sexual abuse charge difficult. “Although mother and baby have both been discharged, the hospital has said it will closely monitor the situation, due to the mother’s age,” he said.
