Tearjerker: Deaf Mother Hears Son’s Voice for the First Time

Amy hears sound for the first time @ 26 years oldTakes a few minutes but worth the experience. Our niece has been deaf since she was born. She has never heard the sound of her parents voice or her 6 year old son, Blake. Every day for the next several months she will learn how sound works and where it comes from. Update: thank you…2012-09-02T16:18:27.000Z

Modern medicine is responsible for miracles of biblical proportions.

Amy, 26, has been deaf since she was born. Her aunt, Catherine Arnold, recorded Amy’s first experience with hearing and shared it online, where it is becoming incredibly popular. Amy is allowed to hear the voices of her father and her son for the first time. She finds hearing for the first time indescribable, understandably, as well as emotional. A highlight is when her 6-year-old’s son, Blake, shouts, “Hi Mom!”

Cochlear implant

Thanks to cochlear implants many people who are deaf are now able to hear for the first time. The procedure involves drilling into the skull and inserting the implant (pictured above) which consists of a microphone, a speech processor, a transmitter, a receiver and stimulator, and electrodes which all work together to help the brain interpret auditory signals. The results are not perfect, by a naturally hearing person’s standards, but they are still astounding. Rehab is required for those who get the implant, so it can work as smoothly as possible.

Arnold updated the public via YouTube on her niece’s progress:

She is continuing her hard work of speech and sound therapy to distinguish what sound is. Her pronunciation has improved vastly and she can hear words and especially music! Naturally, after a lifetime of lip reading and signing, it is still necessary for her to rely on that skill to have conversation in a group. Every day is new and sometimes an exhausting experience. She loves the challenge to improve yet more and she is a joy to be around.
