45 Dead, Including 11 Children, as Building Collapses in India

The death toll has risen to 45, including 11 children, and dozens more are injured after a building collapsed in the Mumbai suburb of Thane, India, on Thursday evening.

The building was being constructed on without authorization when it collapsed, reports The New York Times. The construction was being done without clearances from local authorities. The building had four floors and four more were being added. The cause of the collapse is not immediately known, but the builder and an associate have already been arrested.

Most occupants had gone home for the day and most of those killed were construction workers staying in the building. At least 45 people have been confirmed dead with some 50 more injured. Police said that at least 11 of the dead were children.

As of Friday morning, rescuers continued to search for survivors in the debris.
