Rupert Murdoch, 82, has filed for divorce from his wife of 14 years, Wendi Deng, today at New York State Supreme Court, reports

Murdoch is one of the wealthiest people in the world, Forbes lists his wealth at $8.2 billion, his wealth is generated through his media holdings, his News Corporation media conglomerate owns 20th Century Fox, Fox News, and the New York Post.

1. Murdoch’s Last Divorce Was the Most Expensive in History

Murdoch’s previous divorce in 1999, from Anna Murdoch, whom he’d been married to for 30 years, was the most expensive divorce in history. Despite the amicable split, Anna took $1.8 billion from the News Corp chairman. Though his management were keen to stress at the time that this settlement would have no affect on Murdoch’s business interests.

Anna, later remarried, a financier named William Mann in late 1999.

2. Murdoch and Deng’s Marriage Lasted 14 Years

Murdoch and Deng met in Hong Kong in 1997 at a party, they were married in 1999, 17 days after his divorce from Anna.

They were married in New York harbor aboard Murdoch’s yacht, Morning Glory. 82 people attended the service, with the NYPD providing security. At the time Murdoch was 68 and Deng was 32.

3. The Couple Have Two Daughters

Grace, 11, and Chloe, 9, are the youngest of Murdoch’s six children.

He has one daughter, Prudence, 54, who in 2011 was promoted to the board of Times Newspaper Holdings in 2011, cementing her place in the family business, from his first marriage to Patricia Booker.

Murdoch’s eldest son, Lachlan, 41, serves on the board of News Corporation, but only in a non-executive role, he resigned his executive duties in 2005. At the time, Murdoch said he was “deeply saddened” by Lachlan’s resignation. He was the first child from Murdoch’s second marriage to Anna Tvor.

His other son, James, 40, is now the only member of the family, other than Rupert, directly involved in the running of News Corp. In 2011, James became the Murdoch-face of the phone-hacking scandal investigations, following his promotion to the News International section of the corporation.

Murdoch’s second eldest daughter, Elizabeth, initially benefitted from her father’s philanthropy towards her career as she purchased TV stations in the U.S. based on a $35 million dollar loan from her father. But after rising through the ranks within Murdoch’s UK cable network BskyB, she fell out with the company and now works as an independent TV producer in London. She is married to Matthew Freud, great-grandson to Sigmund Freud.

4. Deng Made World Headlines When She Defended Her Husband From a Pie

In July 2011, Deng leaped to the defense of her husband when Jonathan Bowles threw a shaving foam pie at Murdoch during the phone hacking scandal.

5. This Will Be Murdoch’s Third Divorce

This will be Murdoch’s third divorce. His first marriage to Patricia Booker, a shop assistant from Melbourne, Australia, lasted from 1957-67. He then married Anna Maria Torv, in 1968, with their marriage ending in June 1998.

6. Deng is no “Kept-Woman”

Deng is a successful businesswoman, she is the CEO of the film company Big Feet Productions, she holds a MBA from Yale in business.

Just prior to her marriage to Murdoch, Deng stepped down as vice-president of Murdoch’s Hong Kong-based English-language cable network Star Television.

7. This is an Interesting Time For Murdoch’s News Corp

Murdoch is in the process of splitting News Corp into two entities which will see him act as chairman of both. Deadline reports:

Early signs are that the divorce will not impact Murdoch’s media holdings. New Corp is in the process of spinning off its publishing assets into a separately traded company. Murdoch will control both of these entities.

In 1987, Deng was sponsored for a U.S. Visa by Jake and Joyce Cherry. She came to the U.S. to study, it was later revealed that she was having an affair with Jake, who was 30 years older than Deng. Despite this marriage lasting only two years, Deng was able to secure a green card.

9. Deng Was Once Falsely Verified on Twitter

In 2012, Twitter accidentally verified an account claiming to be Deng. It created controversy as Deng appeared to entering into flirtatious behavior with celebrities like Ricky Gervais.

10. The Couple’s Former Nanny Once Talked of the Horrors of Living With the Murdoch Family

Murdoch and Deng’s former nanny, Ying-Shu Hsu, blew the whistle on the domestic horrors of living with the Murdoch family. She said she was never paid for overtime, had no benefits, and watched as Deng “body-shamed” the couple’s two daughters.
